This certification is designed for Coating Inspectors responsible for performing and documenting basic and non-destructive inspections of liquid coatings applied by brush, roller or spray to steel surfaces under the supervision of a level 2 in a shop setting or level 3 inspector when working in a shop or field setting.

A candidate should have entry level knowledge of:

Core Exam Requirement 1

Certification Exam-CIP Level 1 Practical exam

Application Submission

Certification candidates must apply for this certification by submitting an on-line application which is subject to approval.


Certification candidates have four (4) years to complete all requirements, including a successful completion of the exam, and an approved application with the required work experience and education requirements.

To begin the certification process:

Register for the NACE CIP Level 1 Course

Upon successful completion of requirements, the candidate will be awarded a NACE Coating Inspector Level 1

Certification renewal requirements

  • An approved Recertification application is required every 3 years
  • 1.5 year’s work experience
  • Renewal Fee
  • Members-$240 USD
